Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy

Here are some answers to common questions about the therapy process with me. Please contact us if you don't see your question listed here.

I’ve never been in therapy, what can I expect?

Prior to your first therapy session, you will receive intake paperwork to complete through a secure online client portal. We will review your intake documents in our first session and continue what is called the intake process. We use a holistic approach with our clients and want to get to know you within the broader context of your life experiences, family, and culture. Once we are finished gathering history of the issue that brought you to therapy, we will discuss the changes you want to see and set measurable goals. As you begin to resolve the issue that brought you to therapy, you’ll also be learning new skills that will help you see yourself and the world differently. Mind Body Therapy believes in using a collaborative approach with clients in deciding when they are ready to end therapy. We also enjoy hearing  your feedback about how our sessions are going and if there are any changes we can make for your needs to be met. While there is not a prescribed number of sessions in therapy, research suggests that you may continue to see benefits of therapy even after it is over.

What types of therapy do you use?

Therapists at Mind Body Therapy are trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness interventions and often use a combination of approaches that work best for you and your presenting concerns. Past clients have shared that the use of a person centered approach feels caring and supports them in feeling grounded as they navigate change in their lives. Check out the videos below if you want to know a little more about the acronyms used above.

What is online therapy like?

Online therapy helps eliminate many of the stressors that made therapy inaccessible in the past like getting off work in time, fighting traffic or finding childcare. Meeting online also allows for additional confidentiality so you don’t have to worry about who you might run into in the waiting room. Virtual therapy appointments are not only more convenient, they are also effective. Emerging research has shown online therapy is just as effective as in person therapy for anxiety and depression.

What is trauma-Informed yoga therapy?

Trauma-informed yoga shows participants how to calm their minds and regulate physical and emotional responses in the body. Learning how to tolerate sensation is an important part of regaining a feeling of safety in the body. Trauma-informed yoga does not require prior experience, and is mostly composed of gentle movements at a pace that works for you.

The core components of Trauma-informed yoga are:

  • Safety: Your emotional safety is equally important to physical safety
  • Feeling: Invitation to notice bodily sensations, the focus is on feeling rather than accomplishing a pose
  • Choice: Freedom to explore choices rather than instructing you what to feel, both physically and emotionally

Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about trauma informed yoga therapy.

What is my financial investment?

Deciding to go to therapy is a investment in yourself. You may want to consider the opportunity cost of not getting expert help at the right time. Research suggests the growth and insight you gain from therapy will continue long after our last session.

Do you take insurance?

We only accept on insurance provider, Aetna and are considered an out-of-network provider. Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis after our first session together. Based on that diagnosis and how severe it is, insurance then decides how long they will pay for your treatment. By choosing to not use health insurance you are able to:

  • Avoid having a diagnosis label permanently attached to your health record
  • Decide your own preferences for goals and length of treatment
  • Ensure your personal records stay confidential. No one will know you are in therapy unless you decide to tell them

At your request, we will provide you with documentation  to claim out-of-network benefits. Most PPO insurance plans provide out-of-network coverage. Please contact your insurance company either online or via the member services number located on the back of your insurance card to find out if you have existing out-of-network-benefits and ask about whether or not they offer reimbursement for outpatient mental health, at what percentage, and whether you need to spend a certain amount towards your deductible first.

How long will it take?

We understand that you want to see progress ASAP. If you are willing to reach out for support things are probably uncomfortable! For some, simply making the initial therapy appointment brings some relief. We are committed to supporting you in the change you want to see as soon as possible. It is important to note that everyone’s circumstances are unique to them (oh, the joys of being human!) and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

What are your hours?

We see clients by appointment only. Please contact your provider to learn more.
